Voxbound changelog

What changed in each version of Voxbound. A copy installed with the installer offers each new version from inside the app; a portable copy is updated by downloading it again from your Gumroad library. See updates.

4.1.14 · 25 September 2026

• New Update tags only button beside Merge files. With one finished .m4b, .m4a or .mp3 in the file list, it writes the book's details, a new cover or an edited chapter list into that file without re-encoding the audio, which takes seconds. It updates the file in place or saves a copy, and says first which tags will be removed because their boxes are empty.
• New Load from file button in the Chapters tab. It loads the chapters already in a finished book, so you can rename or move them and write them back with Update tags only.
• Import tags also reads the series, series number, subtitle and language.
• Dialogs such as Look up no longer close when you drag to select text in a box and let go outside the dialog. A click outside still closes them.

4.1.13 · 24 September 2026

• Fixed a problem in 4.1.12: empty brackets such as () or [], and a # after a space at the end, were removed from titles in file and folder names, so Function () became Function and C # became C.
• Fixed a problem in 4.1.12: when a folder inside the output folder was a junction, books were saved straight into the output folder instead.
• Main buttons, such as Merge files, use a darker blue, so their white text meets the WCAG AA contrast level.
• When Windows is set to show fewer animations (Animation effects off in Windows 11, Show animations in Windows off in Windows 10), the background stays still and the app's animations stop.

• Subfolder templates can no longer place a book outside the output folder, whatever the book's details contain.
• In the queue, a book whose output folder Windows refuses to create fails on its own instead of stopping every later batch until Voxbound is restarted.
• Empty fields no longer leave folders named # or (). Names Windows reserves, such as CON, get an underscore, and control characters are replaced. Folder names are cut to 120 characters.
• Known problems, fixed in 4.1.13: empty brackets and a spaced # at the end were removed from titles in file and folder names, and when a folder inside the output folder was a junction, books were saved straight into the output folder.

• The series and its number are written into the book, where Audiobookshelf reads them. An M4B also gets the description in its own description tag, and an MP3 also gets the subtitle.
• A subfolder template with slashes makes nested folders, such as {Author}/{Series}/{Title}. Parts that come out empty are left out.
• The installer tells Windows Explorer to refresh its icons when it finishes.

• Look up searches Apple Books as well as Google Books, retries with a looser search when nothing matches, and uses Open Library only when neither finds the book. The Apple Books search goes straight from your PC to Apple, so Apple sees the search and your IP address; see the privacy policy.
• A chapter list you edit or import is put in time order and tidied, in M4B merges from the editor or the queue and in Repair a file: each chapter ends where the next begins, and empty chapters are removed. Before, merging from the editor stopped and asked you to auto-fix the list first, and the queue wrote it out of order. The merge summary, the queue and the repair result say what was corrected.

• In-app updates: when a new version is out, the update bar offers it. Update now downloads it, checks it against its published checksum, installs it and opens Voxbound again.

4.1.7 · 24 September 2026

• Fixed damaged books. In 4.1.6 and earlier, two merges of the same book, or a cancelled merge, could leave a book with damaged audio, and a failed merge could delete an existing book of the same name. Voxbound now writes each book to a temporary file and only puts it in place when the merge has finished. To check a book made with an earlier version, use Verify a file on the Repair & verify tab.
• Cancel stops FFmpeg straight away, even during the last, quiet stage of a long merge.
• Only one Voxbound window opens; starting it again switches to the one that's open.
• The file check after each merge decodes samples from six points in the book, and reports audio that won't play.

4.1.6 · 24 September 2026

• The progress bar moves through every stage of a merge, with a description of the current step, the time taken and the time left.
• Matching files are copied without re-encoding, as intended: AAC files into an M4B with the Generic M4B profile, and MP3 files into an MP3, when Smart mode is on and no normalising, trimming, gaps or EQ are used. Before, the app re-encoded them.
• Look up in the new window's Book card finds a book's details and cover online, from Google Books or Open Library.

• An installer for Windows, which doesn't need administrator rights, alongside a portable zip.
• Settings, the queue and the log are kept in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Voxbound, so they survive an update or reinstall.
• If Microsoft Edge WebView2 is missing, Voxbound says so and offers the download.
• Voxbound starts faster: it's installed as a folder instead of one file that unpacked itself on every launch.
• A log file, voxbound.log, records what the app did, for support.

• A new window: drag and drop files or folders, edit the book's details and chapters, and merge from one screen.
• The queue, watch folder, folder scan, CSV or JSON import, Repair & verify and library scan from the 4.0 window, rebuilt in the new one.
